The issue:

"My boss says he is going to take R50 off my salary each month for expenses in the workplace, such as coffee, tea etc. Is he allowed to do this?"

The answer:

No. Employers may not deduct money from a worker’s pay unless:

  • The worker agrees in writing to the deduction of a debt, or
  • The deduction is made in terms of a collective agreement, law (e.g. UIF contributions), court order or arbitration award.

Taking off an amount for "expenses" is not allowed - unless you have agreed to this.
