3 February 2021 - Workers of the Pakistan Steel Mills were issued retrenchment letters on 17 November 2020, which they petitioned against as it was considered illegal and a violation of their fundamental rights. The privatisation of the PSM to accommodate a third party is believed to be the reason that so many workers were sacked. The Sindh High Court has since issued notices to deal with this situation. Female employees are allowed a maximum of 3 months - 90 days - of fully paid maternity leave in Pakistan. They must have worked at the place of employment for at least four months prior to the date of the child’s birth. How many days of paid leave is an employee entitled to in Pakistan? According to section 49-B of Factories Act, an employee is allowed 14 days paid annual leave, after completion of 12 months of continuous service. As per the Standing Orders Ordinance Act of 1968, every employer in Pakistan is required to provide an employee contract wherein the terms and conditions of the employee’s service are clearly stated.
