What is the meaning of a “CV”?

It is an abbreviation of Curriculum Vitae, which is an outline of an individual’s education and his or her professional history. This document is usually prepared for the purpose of applying for a job. It is a way in which one markets his/her abilities, skills, qualifications and experience to an employer.

What contents should a CV include?

Most employers in Uganda will be interested in the following aspects of a CV:

  • Previous related work experience
  • Qualification and skills
  • Accomplishments
  • Spelling and grammar
  • Education
  • Intangibles like “individuality” and “desire to succeed”
  • Clear objectives
  • Key words added
  • Contact information
  • Personal experiences
  • Computer skills

What defines a winning CV?

In Uganda, there is no single correct way to write and present a CV. However, the following general principles apply. The CV should be:

  • Tailored to a specific job or career for which one is applying for, clearly spelling out the relevant skills one has to offer
  • Clearly laid out and carefully showing what the employee is applying for
  • Informative
  • Accurate when it comes to grammar, spelling and content

What is the length of a good CV?

Much as there are no absolute rules, a CV is generally estimated to cover at least no more than two sides of an A4 sheet. The best way to get it right is by making a summary of one’s career history on a single side.

Note: Academic and technical CVs may be much longer, up to between four and five pages.

Which words can add value and attract the reader?

It should always be in your best interest to create a positive impression with the words you use. Make it a point to use action words like: achieved, coordinated, developed, initiated, promoted and researched, and others with similar intent.

What should I keep in mind when writing my CV?

  •  Focus on the job being applied for, and what skills you can offer
  • Sell yourself – show your best side
  • Use correct grammar and spelling
  • Make sure to list all your relevant experience and skills, from education qualifications to computer skills to social involvement, such as being captain of a local soccer club or working at a charity
