United Kingdom - Tower Hamlets workers strike - June 30, 2020

Thousands of workers in east London are to stage strikes after the Labour-run council that employs them announced it would dismiss and rehire them all on less favourable terms. Social workers, children’s services workers, environmental health workers and benefits office workers are among 4,000 staff at Tower Hamlets council affected by the dispute. They say a new contract that includes cuts to travel allowances and out-of­hours payments will leave them worse off. The package includes deep cuts to severance pay, which have sparked fears over potential, as yet unannounced, plans for redundancies.
