The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions  (ZCTU) has encouraged the country’s young female workers to join trade unions and ensure that their labour-related challenges are tackled in accordance with Zambian Labour Laws. This is in line with the aims of the international Decisions for Life project.

ZCTU President Leonard Hikaumba notes that the project is timely as more young female workers in the service industry are getting exploited.

Hikaumba says ZCTU is committed to ensuring that exploitation of young female workers, especially those in the service and hospitality industry, is brought to a halt.

“We are aware of the on-going 14-nation campaign by the ITUC (International Trade Union Confederation). We commend the confederation for this initiative and we will fully support this project to its end,” says Hikaumba.

He laments that Zambia is one of the many countries across the region that have a high number of exploited young female workers.

Most of those young female workers are either not affiliated to any union or they lack the motivation to join a trade union. However, by joining trade unions their concerns in the workplace can be addressed in accordance with Zambian Labour Laws which call for fair and equal treatment of every employee regardless of race or gender.
