Unlike many jobs in the world that require one to “come as you are”, the job of a flight attendant - perhaps like that of a model - comes with some physical requirements, which have to be met before one can even be considered for the job.

What is required from Flight Attendants?

Firstly, they are subjected to height requirements for safety reasons, as most airlines have to ensure that all flight attendants can reach the overheard safety equipment.

The acceptable height is 160 to 185 centimetres (5ft 3inches to 6ft 1inches) tall.

Secondly, their weight must be proportionate to their height. Persons outside the normal range may not be qualified to act as flight attendants.

According to Air Transport experts, flight attendants are expected to show a high level of personal grooming. Female attendants are expected to use appropriate cosmetics and all attendants must have very high levels of personal hygiene. They must not have any tattoos visible when a uniform is worn. These requirements are designed to give the airline a positive image.

Glamour Girls

For example, in the 1960s and 1970s, many airlines began advertising the attractiveness and friendliness of their “stewardesses” and our very own, now defunct Zambian Airways was no exception.

The airline conducted several Miss Zambia Airways contests where people like the late Vernonica Kalaluka, Chipasha Chisengalumbwe and Vera Bweupe won the titles; all this was done to improve the image of the airline.

To date Singapore Airlines, which is one of the oldest airlines in the world, is still famous for the effective use of the image of their stewardesses, known as “Singapore Girls” in their advertising material.
